As if Beck Hansen wasn’t already cool enough, he’s put together a Record Club project on his website. Basically, Beck gets together with fellow musicians to record a cover version of an entire album in one day. The latest album attempt (number 4 for the Record Club) is INXS ‘Kick’ and was laid down on March 3rd, 2010. Previous album covers include The Velvet Underground & Nico, Skip Spence and Leonard Cohen and previous collaboraters on this project include Feist, Wilco and The Liars.
Beck posts the videos of their tracks on his website in the order they appear on the album. Right now we’re up to Track 2. on Kick.
Here is Beck’s explanation of his Record Club:
Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.
